If you are planning to hire a car in Canada for your next Canada trip, here are some important things to know about auto transport in Canada.

1. The driver's age needs to be 21 to rent a car. Another thing to note is that drivers between the age of 21 to 24 are often charged an extra surcharge, as statistic shows this group of drivers are more prone to accidents than others. Those above the age of 75 may also face such a surcharge.

2. Second, an international or US driver's license is a must for renting a Canadian car. The language of the license can be either English or French. You must furnish an English translation if your license is in any other language. It is why car rental companies will suggest you submit an International Driving Permit or IDP while renting a car.

3. If you are planning a long road trip, renting a car for a group is best if you have more than one driver. It will make your driving easier as drivers won't be fatigued, but the downside is that car rental companies may charge more for multiple drivers. So, consider that before applying for various drivers.

4. If you come from any country that drives on the right side of the road, you won't have any problem going to Canada. Those from Europe will find that most rental cars in Canada come with automatic transmissions. If you have a problem with that, you can ask for a vehicle with a manual transmission while booking the car with your car rental company. Reading the fine details before renting a car is very much advised.

5. What type of car you rent should depend on where you are driving and the time of the year. For example, if you are going to Banff or any such mountainous region, a 4X4 vehicle should be rented, especially if you are visiting between November and April. If you are not keen on this type of vehicle, it is imperative to rent a car with a good snow tyre when driving during winter months. In some provinces of Canada, like British Columbia, you must have a rented vehicle with snow tyres when driving in winter.
